Texas Blue Lacy | Blue Lacy History | Breed Information

Lacy Game Dog was named after the Lacy brothers Ewin, Frank, Harry, and George Lacy who relocated in 1885 from Kentucky to Burnet County, Texas. The four brothers needed an all-in-all working dog on their Lacy Lans Ranch that could help track and tree small game, watch over the homestead, herd free-roaming hogs and cattle, and hunt wild hogs and deer.

In addition, the four brothers needed the dog to be trainable, fast, hardworking, and able to resist the Texas weather. They created the Lacy Game Dog to meet their needs by breeding a Greyhound, a Wolf, an English Shepherd, an unknown Scent Hound, and possibly a Coyote. These dogs have since been recognized as true Texas breeds. Lacy Game Dogs were named the Texas official State Dog Breeds in June 2005.

Blue Lacy Training

Lacy Game Dogs are intelligent, trainable, active dogs. They are sensitive dogs that may shut off in cases of yelling and respond well to stern but soft commands like come, sit, lie down, off, and don’t touch. Lacy Game Dog has a high adaptability level that helps them adapt to most living conditions. They are also good with kids and can live in homesteads with other pets with early socialization. However, if early socialization did not happen, Lacy Game Dogs can be aggressive to other animals like other dogs, and people.

Socialization training takes place from the age of three to sixteen weeks. This is where the owner exposes the Lacy Dog to a wide variety of people, animals, places, surfaces, sight, smell, and sounds like door bells, music, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, sirens, and lawn mowers. Enrolling the Lacy Dog in a puppy class will also offer an opportunity for the dog to interact with other canines.

Keep the training session short and not more than 15 minutes so that your dog doesn’t lose interest. Use positive reinforcement like praise, rewards, and treats to keep your dog eager to learn and understand the commands. Lacy Dogs are housebroken through potty training, crate training, and creating a feeding schedule. Ensure that you potty train your dog outside the house to maintain your home’s hygiene.
