Great Danes are large-sized dogs (also referred to as Apollo of Dogs or gentle giant) that originated from Germany. They are one of the largest breeds of dogs that were originally used for hunting deer and wild boar. Currently, they are used as companion dogs as well as home guardians since they are alert. Great Danes have an imposing weight, strength, and size and just the sight of them is enough to make intruders think twice. This breed is also popular for seeking physical affection from its owners earning the name, 'gentle giant'.
Doberman (also referred to as Doberman Pinscher, Dobie, or Dobermann) is a medium-sized large breed of domestic dog that was developed in Germany in the late 19th century by Louis Dobermann. Traditionally, these dogs had docked tails and cropped ears. However, this practice has been abolished in most Commonwealth countries.
Shiba Inu( also referred to as Shiba or Shibas in plural by AKC) is a small-medium spitz breed of dog originally from Japan that was bred for hunting. This is a dog that adapts well to hiking trails and mountainous terrain. It is often mistaken for other Japanese dogs such as Hokkaido or Akita Inu due to the similarities that they share. However, Shiba is a different breed with a distinct temperament and bloodline.
Italian Greyhound( also referred to as IG by AKC) is a sighthound breed of dog that hunts by sight and gives the prey a chase just like Whippets and Greyhounds. It is the smallest of the sighthounds and possesses a deep chest, long neck, long slender legs, and a tucked-up abdomen. IGs also have a small head that is narrow and elongated. According to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals in the US, this breed is the least affected by hip dysplasia of 157 breeds that were studied. It makes a good watchdog for its surprisingly deep and big-dog bark.
Greyhound also referred to as English Greyhound is a sighthound breed of dog that has an inverted S shape body type. This dog was bred for greyhound racing and coursing game. However, the coursing game is now banned in most countries. During track racing, an artificial lure in a form of a windsock travels ahead of the Greyhounds on a rail until they close the finish line.
Whippet is a sighthound breed dog of medium size that originated from England. This breed was descended from Greyhound. The name of this dog was derived in the early 1600 word, now obsolete, meaning to move briskly. Whippets also participate in dog sports such as flyball, dock diving, agility, and lure coursing. This breed is also the fastest dog of their weight due to their ability to run in a double suspension gallop attaining a speed of up to 35 miles per hour (56 km/h).
Dalmatian is a medium-sized dog breed popular for its white coat that is marked with brown or black colored spots. Originally, they were used as hunting dogs, carriage dogs and firefighting dogs. Dalmatians become popular as a result of a novel written by British author Dodie Smith titled, The Hundred and One Dalmatians. This breed also gained prominence after the release of two Walt Disney Films based on the book.
Airedale Terrier (nicknamed King of Terriers or Airedale) is a terrier type of dog that originated in the valley of Dale of the River Aire. This breed earned the nickname King of Terriers since it is the largest of the terrier breeds. Airedales are also referred to as Waterside Terriers and Bingley Terriers.
Rat Terrier also referred to as Ratting Terrier, American Rat Terrier, and Decker Giant( nicknamed Rat, Rattie, and RT) is a dog breed that was originally used as a hunting companion and farm dog . It was bred in the United States. Currently, this dog is kept as a family pet, pest control, contraband search dogs, therapy, assistance, and other human-care jobs. According to AKC and UKC Rat Terriers come in two varieties, Miniatures, and Standard. The Standard Variety is a large strain that often exceeds 11kg ( approx. 25 pounds).
