Bull Terrier( also referred to as BT, English Bull Terrier, and Bully) is a type of terrier dog originally from England. It has a distinctive egg-shaped head when viewed from the front. This dog also has unique triangular eyes. Bull Terrier dogs may be both stubborn and independent, and therefore, they are not considered suitable for an inexperienced dog owner. Early socialization for Bull Terriers ensure that they will get along with other dogs and animals. A miniature version of this breed is Miniature Bull Terrier.
Boston Terrier is a non-sporting dog breed originally from the United States of America. It is referred to as the American Gentleman due to its markings resembling formal wear and its pleasant personality. Bostons were the first non-sporting breed in the USA. This breed's genetic makeup produces a short tail that should not exceed two inches in length( approx. 5.08cm).
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a small breed of spaniel that originated in the United Kingdom in the 20th century. Cavaliers were first recognized as a separate breed in 1945 by the Kennel Club. AKC recognized this breed in the United States in 1995. These dogs are good with other dogs and children making them ideal as pets in houses that have more than one breed of dog as long as the other dog is trained. Cavaliers also regard all strangers as friends and hence may not make good guard dogs.
Chow Chow are progenitors of other spitz-type of breeds such as dainty Pomeranian and Norwegian Elkhound. It has a double dense coat that is either smooth and short or rough and long. In the neck area, the fur is particularly thick giving it a distinctive ruff appearance. This breed is considered a high-risk dog by some homeowners insurance companies. Chows also have strong hunting instincts and it is recommended that these dogs stay leashed, in a fenced yard, and away from small breeds of dogs and cats.
Maltese is one of the ancient toy dog breeds that is generally associated with the island of Malta. It is considered a direct ancestor to Havanese, Bichon, and Bolognese breeds. This dog is also hypoallergenic and it is kept for competitive exhibition, companionship, and for ornament. This breed was ranked 59th of 79 breeds by Stanley Coren in the assessment of intelligence. A Maltese was also recognized as a breed in 1888 by the American Kennel Club(AKC).
Yorkshire Terrier also nicknamed Yorkie is a playful and energetic dog developed in the 19th century. It has been used in the development of other breeds such as the Silky Terrier. A Yorkie is one of the smallest dog breeds of the terrier type. When left alone, this breed often exhibits separation anxiety which is the reason that some dog owners keep two dogs. Yorkies are easy-going dogs and are great with older adults and children.
Shih Tzu is a sturdy toy dog breed originally from Tibet. This breed has an ever-growing coat that should be brushed regularly. The dog is popular for its playful and fun personality. It also adapts well to different situations. However, Shih Tzus are not considered the most obedient breed due to their highly independent nature. One of the required standard features for this breed is an underbite. This dog also makes a great pet for a dog owner residing in an apartment or who doesn't have a big backyard.
Chihuahua is among the smallest breed of dogs that originated from Mexico. It is named after a state in Mexico, Chihuahua. This breed was first registered by AKC in 1904. The Chihuahua Club of America was created to develop a community of dog breeders in 1923 and further the breed in the US. Ch. Attas’ Gretchen won the first-all breed Best in Show in 1951.
Rottweiler(also nicknamed Rottie) is a domestic dog that is considered one of the oldest dog breeds dating back to Roman times. It is regarded as large or medium-to-large. This dog was initially used for herding cattle or driving dogs. Rottweiler originated from the mastiffs of the Roman legions and acquired its name from the old free city of Rottweil.
Beagle is a breed of dog originally from England that hunts by scent rather than sight. It was developed for hunting hare referred to as beagling. This breed has a great sense of smell and superior tracking instincts and therefore, they are used in detecting prohibited foodstuffs and agricultural imports around the world.
