American Bully Dog Breed Introduction
American Bully ( nicknamed Am Bully or Bully) is a medium to large sized breed with a blocky head and a muscular body. It was developed in the United States. The American Bully was recognized as a breed by the ABKC ( American Bully Kennel Club) in 2004. These dogs give the impression of great strength for their size. The American Bullies should have the appearance of heavy structure with a bulky build and look. This breed makes excellent family companion if bred and raised well. This is because it exhibits a zest for life, confidence, and an ebullient willingness to please and bond with the family. Although this breed possess a powerful and fierce appearance, its demeanor is gentle.
According to AKBC, the American Bullies are great with kids and extremely friendly with other dogs, animals, and strangers. AKBC has grouped the American Bullies into four varieties according to their height; Standard, Pocket, XL, and Classic. However, outside the standards of the breed, dogs shorter or taller than the four variations have been bred. The taller and larger dogs are called XXL while the smaller dogs are known as Micro. Although, neither has been recognized by the Kennel clubs as legitimate varieties.
The breed standards highly discourage human or dog aggression. However, a level of dog aggression maybe the characteristic of the breed. Furthermore, breeders have admitted that American Bullies can be very dangerous if improperly bred or raised. There have been reports of human attacks by this breed. In July 2022, Joanne Robinson was attacked and killed in her own home in Rotherham, England by her pet, American Bully XL. She was coming home at 10 pm after a night out. Joanne’s partner also suffered serious injuries while trying to pull the dog.
American Bully History | Origin
The American Bully is a recent breed that was developed in the 20th century ( 1980s to 1990s). The foundation parent was the American Pit Bull Terrier(APBT). The APBT has maintained a characteristic temperament and appearance for over a century. Therefore, several types of APBT evolved as with any-long standing breed. One particular strain was crossbred to create a specific and stockier physique initially mispresented as purebred APBTs by breeders.
Finally, enough breeders came to a conclusion that these dogs were different enough from the American Pit Bull Terriers that it warranted them admitting that they were a different breed altogether. The crossbreed was further infused with other breeds such as English Bulldog, American Bulldog, and Olde English Bulldogge in order to fine-tune the desired personal traits and physical characteristics.
The American Bully was recognized by EBKC(European Bully Kennel Club) in 2018. This breed has been UKC recognized since July 2013. However, neither American Kennel Club nor the Kennel Club have accepted or recognized the American Bully into their registry as a purebred dog.

The American Bully has a lifespan of 8 to 13 years.
American Bully Grooming
The American Bully is a low-maintenance dog. It has a short, smooth, and close coat that is moderately stiff to the touch. The American Bullies shed at low levels all-year round. Weekly brushing using a grooming mitt or a hound glove will help to remove dirt, loose hair, and promote new hair growth. Although, the shed hair is more noticeable during spring and fall. Three or two brushings per week will help to keep shedding to a minimum.

Brush the teeth of a Bully twice a week if not daily to remove tartar buildup using a dog-formulated toothpaste and toothbrush. Clean the ears of the American Bully once a week using an ear cleanser solution and cotton balls to get rid of excess wax and debris. While cleaning the ears, look out for signs of dog’s ear infection such as odor, redness, or a dark discharge.

The American Bully is an energetic, playful, loving, affectionate, and gentle dog that is willing to please which makes it highly trainable. However, they are not aware of their strength as well as fierce and powerful appearance. Therefore, this breed needs training to learn how to peacefully coexist with people and other dogs without taking advantage of its strength. Provision of early training and socialization helps to mold the temperament and behavior of the dog positively. The Potty training of the American Bully commences immediately the pup comes home. American Bully Heat Cycle | Mating
The American Bully goes on a heat cycle for the first time between the age of 6 to 12 months. Although, early bloomers may go on a heat season at the age of 4 months. The American Bully puppies should especially feed on food formulated for medium to large-breed puppy for the first 1.2 years to ensure slow and steady growth. The youngsters of this breed should consume enough proteins to ensure they start bulking up. Parents should also consider adding a protein supplement to the diet of the puppy. Watch the calorie consumption and weight level of this breed to avoid overfeeding.
Check the physique of your pet to tell whether it is overweight or underweight. If you can see the ribs, chances are the dog is underweight. However, if the ribs are not visible but you can feel them without pressing hard, the American Bully has an ideal weight. If you cannot feel the ribs, the dog is overweight and should be exercised. The following are the allergies that affect American Bullies:
Environmental allergies – Some of the environmental allergens that affect American Bullies include grass, ragweed, mites, fleas, pollen, trees, dust and dust mites, and house molds. The flea bites cause flea allergy dermatitis. This parasite normally bites underneath the tail and on the back legs causing excessive scratching and biting until the skin around the bite area is raw. Contact allergies – The American Bully is more prone to contact and environmental allergies due to the short coat. This allergy causes inflammation once the allergen comes in contact with the skin. Some of the contact allergens that affect American Bulldogs include plastics, poison Ivy, lawn chemicals, carpet cleaning products, bed linens, grooming products, medications, oak plants, latex, and flea collars. American Bully Skin Allergies
The American Bully may suffer from skin allergies due to food, contact, and environmental allergies that manifest on the skin. One of the environmental allergens, flea, cause flea allergy dermatitis. American Bully parents may confuse food sensitivities with food allergies since they both cause vomiting and diarrhea. However, food sensitivity in dogs does not cause an immune response. Instead, it occurs as a gradual response to an offending ingredient in the diet of the dog. Some of the ingredients that cause food intolerance in American Bullies include fillers, corn, soy, wheat, chemicals, preservatives, additives, lamb, chicken, beef, pork, turkey, fish, milk, eggs, etc.
Signs of food intolerance in an American Bully include vomiting, diarrhea, poor skin and coat, foot infections, ear infections, and itchiness. Owners are urged to work closely with the vet to manage the symptoms and find the offending ingredient in the diet of the dog through elimination method. However, some owners may decide to totally switch to a fresh and raw diet.
